I'm Chris Larson is a Minneapolis-based graphic designer. While I'm available for freelance work, I'm also the art director for Voltage: Fashion Amplified and the staff designer for L'étoile Magazine. My other interests include biking, art, music, fashion and nightlife.

On the Importance of Personal Projects

I've been drawing a lot since my last post. This is really unusual for me, but In the fall I always feel more creative and have a lot more energy to produce, so it's been easy. But when a couple of the drawings were used for purpose driven, work-related projects, I was delighted to find that my belief in the importance of personal projects had been reaffirmed. So, in the spirit of this epiphany (and because I can't talk about a lot of the other stuff I'm working on!), a few entries from my sketchbook.

First, my friend Eve needed some business cards. She's so darn cute I figured it made a lot of sense to put that adorable face on her card. I added an early 1900s-inspired frame and some apples (a play on her name, of course), and that was that.
I don't actually know this Luis fellow, but he's awfully handsome, right? A friend of mine who lives in Spain was throwing a birthday party for Luis and he asked me to whip something up. He also requested the crown, but I think Luis looks better without it.
It's Fall, Y'all.
Well, almost fall. It’s a very muggy 80° as I’m typing this. However, I always seem to kick into high gear right about this time of year, and something tells me this Autumn will be no exception.
First of all, my pal Phil Miner is throwing a party at Jetset in an effort to help fund his yoga instructor training. I created this flyer to help him promote the event. Doesn’t he look handsome? If you’re in the area and looking for well-crafted cocktails and modern decor, check it out.

The following Saturday, head over to the Ignite Models Studio for SCENEASOTA, one of MN Fashion Week’s must-see events. This runway show, produced by local designer/cutie Maritza Ramirez, boasts a great lineup of fall collections from six up-and-coming Twin Cities designers. I’m particularly excited because this show also marks the design debut of noted fashionista and mplsart.com founder Emma Berg.
My contribution? You guessed it: flyers, programs and other promotional ephemera.
The people watching alone will be worth the ticket price. This event is just one of the many in MN Fashion Week’s Fall ’09 lineup. For the full shakedown on MN Fashion Week, click here.
